N33bn alleged fraud: How N18bn was paid into Mompha’s bank account —Witness A prosecution witness, Peter Ademola Adegoke, who works as a Compliance Officer with Fidelity Bank Plc, on Friday (today) told Justice Abdullai M. Liman of the Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos, how the sum of N18bn was paid into the account of a company, Ismalob Global Investments, belonging to Ismaila Mustapha, also known as Mompha. Mompha was arraigned on November 25, 2019 on 14 counts bordering on money laundering to the tune of N33bn. The EFCC made this known on Friday in a series of tweets via its verified Twitter handle @officialEFCC. Telecommunications operators in the country said they may be forced to disconnect the links that allow bank customers perform financial transactions on their phones. This came as the operators insisted the banks must pay for the use of Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD), which rides on telecoms infrastructure. USSD is a Global System for Mobile (GSM) communication technology that is used to send text between a mobile phone and an application programme in the network. It is currently the best available communications technology to deliver mobile financial services to low-income customers. The operators had recently announced plans to start charging mobile users for every session of USSD, aside charges by banks. The announcement had sparked outrage, prompting the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Pantami, to order its suspension. Men of the Edo State Police Command have arrested a middle-aged woman identified as Eki Ekhator for allegedly killing her husband by squeezing his manhood. The incident was said to have happened at Ukhiri community in Ikpoba-Okha local government area. Sources said the woman had a quarrel with her late husband after accusing him of infidelity. She was said to have always had fracas with her husband any time he returned home late. On that fateful day, the source said the deceased slapped his wife after a fracas and the woman went for his trousers and held onto his manhood in a violent manner. The man was said to have collapsed and later confirmed dead at the hospital. It was learnt that men of the Homicide department in the Edo state police command are currently investigating the murder. Sources at the police headquarters said the suspect has blamed the incident on the devil. Police spokesman, DSP Chidi Nwabuzor, could not be reached for comments.

The organisers of the planned academic conference on witchcraft planned for Nsukka next week are looking for another venue after the University of Nigeria withdrew the approval for the use of its Energy Centre. The director of the centre wrote conference organisers withdrawing the approval, amidst the opposition by Christian students and the Christian Association of Nigeria against the conference. The United States authorities have frozen about $14.2 million in bank accounts linked to companies registered by Allen Onyema, the chairman of Air Peace Limited. Mr Onyema and Ejiroghene Eghagha, Air Peace’s head of finance and administration, were recently indicted for alleged money laundering and bank fraud in the United States. Both suspects strongly deny the allegations and said they looked forward to proving their innocence in court. The charges were first made public by the United States Department of Justice on Friday night. China has released the first picture of a spacecraft that has been developed to reach Mars. Beijing aims to land the explorer on the Red Planet in less than two years to celebrate the centenary of the ruling Communist Party. A picture of the explorer, called 'Mars 1', was published today by the state-owned China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation (CASIC), Beijing's main space manufacturer. The craft is seen partially covered by golden sheets while a banner at the front suggests the craft was undergoing its last tests. Four workers are seen working around the explorer. A businesswoman, Nkeiruka Cynthia Kamalu, has told a Federal High Court in Lagos that she was raped by a federal lawmaker, Uju Kingsley Chima, on August 9, 2015. Mrs Kamalu told Justice Nicholas Oweibo that following an incestuous relationship with Chima, the lawmaker offered to pay her N20 million if she was divorced by her husband, Mr Gabriel Igbibi.
