11 people arrested as NDLEA destroys two hectares of cannabis farms in Edo State

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Edo Command says it has uncovered and destroyed two hectares of cannabis farms in the state.

Buba Wakawa, State Commander of the Agency disclosed that the farms located in Ovia North East and Etsako West Local Government areas were estimated to yield 248,088kg of cannabis plants.  

He also said that the command had seized 452.36kg of substance suspected to be cannabis as well as Tramadol and Diazepam tablets. According to him, the achievements were recorded in the last one month.
He further said that no fewer than 11 suspected drug traffickers comprising five males and six females apprehended within the period would be charged to court.
He said that the suspects in their various statements have owned up to the crime of drug trafficking to make money. The commander lamented that the problem of drug abuse was posing a major challenge to families in the state.
“Most youths who are hooked on drugs have become openly disobedient to parents, dropping out of school and work, and becoming liabilities to their parents. Some even engage in stealing, armed robbery, cultism and other criminal activities,” he said.

Doctor beheaded by boyfriend after she refused to marry him

A junior doctor was beheaded by her boyfriend after she refused to marry him, police say. The boyfriend then tried to take his own life but failed. 26-year-old Shyngys Bekenov, a teacher, proposed to his girlfriend Nazerke Bekzhanova, 21, who had recently graduated from medical university in Kazakhstan. But Nazerke refused to accept the proposal because her parents did not approve of him, it is believed. Angered by her rejection, Shyngys severed his girlfriend's head as they sat in his car. He then tried but failed to end his own life by stabbing himself in the abdomen after writing a suicide note asking that they should be buried together, according to police. His note claimed he had beheaded the woman after she told him she would marry him, it was reported. A man was seriously humiliated after he was caught having sex with a married woman. According to reports, the duo were caught while romping in an uncompleted building. At least 100 people have been arrested and 80 injured as French police clashed with fuel tax protesters Saturday in Paris.   Thousands of people gathered at the Champs-Élysées in the third weekend of protests against the government over rising fuel prices and taxes.
