Saudi Arabia expels Canadian ambassador after Canada's Foreign Ministry criticized human rights violations in the country

The kingdom of Saudi Arabia has expelled the Canadian ambassador and frozen all new trade and investment with Ottawa after Canada's Foreign Ministry criticized human-rights violations in the country.

In a statement released on Sunday, the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the Canadian Ambassador Dennis Horak must leave the Kingdom "within the next 24 hours" and recalled its own envoy to Canada.

"The Kingdom views the Canadian position as an affront that requires a sharp response to prevent any party from attempting to meddle with Saudi sovereignty," read the statement, adding that it retained the "right to take further action."


The statement follows a series of tweets from the Canadian Foreign Ministry last week urging the Saudi authorities to "immediately release" civil rights activists after a recent Saudi government crackdown has seen a number of high-profile activists detained, including women's rights campaigner Samar Badawi, whose brother Raif has been behind bars since 2012 and is sentenced to receive 1,000 lashes.

An American woman in Zimbabwe has been jailed for 'insulting' President Robert Mugabe by allegedly tweeting an image of him which suggested he has a catheter from an anonymous account which was still active as she languished behind bars on Saturday. Martha O'Donovan, 25, was arrested on Friday morning at her home near Harare, the country'scapital, and was taken into custody on a charge of insulting or undermining the president and trying to overthrow an elected government.Police say that on October 11, O'Donovan tweeted that Mugabe, 93, is a 'very selfish and sick man' and claimed that he was surviving on a catheter. Some workers at the national assembly created a scene on Monday, after Biodun Olujimi, senator representing Ekiti south, allegedly asked her aide to assault a member of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN). The lawmaker was reportedly irked by the decision of the PASAN member to ride in an elevator with her. N1.3bn fraud: Obanikoro to testify against Fayose in court

According to this tweet by Ayo Fayose, former Minister of State for Defense, Musiliu Obanikoro, will be one of the witnesses the EFCC will be presenting when he is charged to court. Fayose was invited by the anti-graft agency over allegations that he gave N1.3 billion to Obanikoro to rig the 2014 governorship election in Ekiti state. The money was allegedly released from the office of former National Security Officer, Namadi Sambo, and is part of the $2.1 billion arms procurement fund allegedly wasted by the former administration.
